Ep. 5: The Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes migrated to Britain and established seven great kingdoms and several smaller ones. Eventually these kingdoms were consolidated under the first English dynasty – the House of Wessex—who established the shire system to govern an emerging nation primarily based on free-peasant landholding. By maintaining many of their Germanic customs, the newly Christianized Anglo-Saxons developed their own systems that valued family and kinship ties, while maintaining a sense of political and social hierarchy.

About the author

The Catholic Esquire is a traditional Catholic who attends the Traditional Latin Mass and holds a Juris Doctor degree, Bachelor of Arts in Economics and is a licensed attorney who has litigated cases for fifteen years. "Esquire" is still a term commonly used to refer to attorneys at law in the United States. It was originally a feudal rank in the Middle Ages just below a knight, which reminds modern Americans that our Western cultural heritage is rooted in a well-ordered society dating back centuries.
